  • Tips on how to get the best bang for your buck in home theater; why spend too much for a larger set when sitting closer solves the problem? AVS Forum is the place for advice, help and user reviews.

    To Calculate Perceived Sizes:
    1. Measure the distance from the screen to where your head will be and enter in the Viewing Distance box at Size Calc
    2. Go to Display Wars and enter a pair of TV sizes to compare like 55" and 60" (like Dirk discusses). Get the widths from stats boxes (in this case, 48" and 52.3") and enter the larger size in Physical Size box.
    3. The Perceived Size box now displays how many degrees of arc that width occupies in your vision. In this example, being 10 feet away from a 52.3 inch wide TV results in ~24.6 degrees.
    4. Click the lock next to the Perceived Size field to lock (duh) that number in.
    5. Now enter the size of the smaller set (e.g. 48") in the Physical Size field. The Distance field changes to 9.18 feet or 110 inches meaning that a 55-inch TV viewed from 110 inches away appears to be the same size as a 60-inch TV viewed from 120 inches (10 feet)!
    6. PROFIT!!!
